Reader and reviewer comments

Opens eyes and mind

"Sam Hilt's The Renaissance of Imagination reads like an exciting record of discovery, exploring the unique aesthetics of Renaissance painting. He clearly explains how to engage with a work of art in this exceptionally well written text.  Without forgetting the historical moment from which a painting emerged, The Renaissance of Imagination teaches us to trust the voice of our own imagination as evoked by a painting, the better to comprehend its meaning. Hilt focuses on the essence of pictorial experience, which we too often miss while flailing through a morass of details about genre, style, and period. When you read this book, Sam Hilt stands beside you as a friendly, educated, and experienced guide (which he is in real life!) to converse with you about the greatest of Renaissance masterpieces.

Whether you are a first time visitor to Italy, an art history student, or a scholar of Renaissance art, this book is a must read. As a senior art historian and university professor I have assayed many an art history book and seen all the works of art noted in this book. Sam Hilt’s The Renaissance of Imagination offers a refreshingly new and different take. His remarkable findings and candid observations will change forever the way you respond to a work of art.”
- Loren Lerner, Professor of Art History, Concordia University, Montreal

A tour de force guide to Italian Renaissance Art

"In The Renaissance of Imagination, Sam Hilt, helps the reader plumb the depths, both emotional and intellectual, of a number of masterworks by great artists of the Italian Renaissance.  While he uses his voluminous knowledge of mythology, history, philosophy and religion to contextualize each painting or sculpture, he keeps us focused on the image itself, allowing the reader to enter a world we might not otherwise experience.  In other words, he allows us to see how these works are both products of their time and classics, that are ahistorical, speaking to concerns that we all experience currently.

For me, he allowed these paintings to come alive, to be deeply moving in the way great art should be."
- Gary Schlesinger

What a refreshing and insightful look at great paintings!

"How great to finally SEE works which have been reproduced and written about so often!

As a painter I appreciate having my eyes opened and that is just what Sam's book does. I do spend a lot of time trying to understand how a painting was done and I appreciate the formal qualities of paintings but I haven't gone as deeply into how a painting "means", which I think is a good way to describe the gift of this book. The approach demonstrated in the essays involves looking and feeling.

At first I needed the author's help with the looking part but I soon found myself following his example and noticing things I hadn't noticed before while asking myself questions about what I was seeing. The idea of dialogue with the paintings or with their subjects provides the entry into the feeling part.
The book's last essay "Trinita Dialogue" is a particularly good example of how that works. It describes the author's emotional encounter with Masaccio's "Trinita" in the church of Santa Maria Novella.

Unlike books which make you feel there is a right and wrong interpretation of a work of art, the examples in these explorations invite you to look longer at works which interest you and inspire confidence in your own discoveries through the process."
